Inspired by the legend of Colapesce, an aldehydic perfume inspired by the smell of the sea and the breeze carried by the wind on the surface
Legend has it that around the year 1230, there lived in Messina a prodigious fisherman, handsome and strong, named Cola.
The sea was his whole life, his passion, and exploring the silent, immense depths made him more free and alive.
He was so fond of the sea that he spent entire days swimming and fishing, even giving up marrying Graziella, a local maiden who was madly in love with him. In the course of his wanderings, he got to know sweet-eyed nymphs and sinuous, bewitching mermaids who pampered him with their harmonious singing, guiding him to the Coral gardens where the most beautiful mother-of-pearl flowers grew and even to their iridescent palaces.
But this passion of his for the sea and the abysses was not well regarded by his mother, because the boy often had the vice of throwing his catch back into the sea, so much so that one day the desperate woman cursed him with this sentence: ‘May you become like a fish!’ Said and done!
As time passed, his skin became increasingly scaly, his hands and feet resembling fins.
At the time, King Frederick II of Sicily was the great monarch of the Swabian House, a lover of the arts and sciences, himself a humanist scholar and a sensitive poet. The king, having heard of Cola's astonishing exploits, wanted to put him to the test, promising him great gifts and the hand of the princess, his daughter, if he passed difficult tests.
King Frederick, from the Royal Palace, first threw a golden cup into the sea below, inciting Colapesce to fish it out. The valiant fisherman, diving into the deep sea, resurfaced, with great skill, bringing back the thrown golden cup to the king.
It was then the turn of the royal crown, which was also thrown into the sea and recovered. It was on this occasion that the king was informed by the boy of what he had seen in the depths.
Colapesce, in fact, said to him: “Your Majesty, there are three pillars on which our island rests: two are intact and strong, the other is shaky, because fire consumes it, between Catania and Messina”.
The ruler wanted to know what this fire looked like and demanded that the boy bring him some. Cola replied that he could not carry the fire in his hands. But the sovereign, still not satisfied, challenged him for the third time... a decisive test that would allow Colapesce to win the hand of his daughter Constance by throwing the girl's ring into the water.
Colapesce dived and arrived on the seabed and stood in the middle of that fire to support (as he still does today) that ill-combined column, renouncing love and wealth in order to hold it up, protecting Sicily from its destruction, and if every now and then the earth between Messina and Catania shakes a little, it is only because Colapesce changes sides on his shoulder.
The legend perhaps takes us back to the strong seismic seismicity of the area, the Sicilians' unconditional love for the sea and the dependence of life on water... it is no coincidence that water envelops the human being from the moment he swims in amniotic fluid.
Top notes:
Bergamot (synthetic): a noble ingredient, chosen for its ambivalence between citrus and wood. It gives fresh and enveloping notes blending perfectly with the marine.
• Pine: an element chosen for the strong presence of the pine tree along the Sicilian coast. Gives resinous and spicy scents.
• Salty: Sea air, a sensation recreated with marine aldehyde ingredients.
Heart notes:
• Aldehydes: elements of high olfactory impact, giving powerful notes that join and propel the top notes;
• Sage: an ingredient chosen to complement the hint given by Bergamot and give it greater persistence in the evolution of the fragrance.
• Iris scent (synthetic): inspired by the legend of Colapesce, a flower symbolising positive feelings and tenacity. Gives floral body.
Base notes:
• Grey amber: an element strongly linked to the sea, an important base note;
• Sea water: combination of several elements evoking the scent of sea water, salty.
• Balsamic notes.
The entire fragrance is underpinned by a delicate note of jasmine.
